Copyright

The Ministry of Justice has incorporated the New Zealand Government Open Access and Licensing (NZGOAL) approach to its online and printed publication.

Purpose

This copyright statement summarises how people and businesses outside of the Ministry of Justice can use information the Ministry publishes on its website or printed material.

Principle of availability

We publish information on the principle that we want people to use it. Generally speaking we would not want to apply limitations on how people use our information, except to acknowledge the source.

Careful thought and consideration needs to be given to why we would restrict the use of our information, for example we would restrict the use of an image that we have exclusive license to.

Background

The SSC has encouraged the public sector to embrace Creative Commons licensing and have developed a policy to help departments apply the licensing scheme. This is called New Zealand Government Open Access and Licensing (NZGOAL).

NZGOAL’s purpose:

NZGOAL’s purpose is two-fold:

  • enable people to re-use government material with confidence that they are legally entitled to do so; for their own purposes, whether economic, environmental, creative or cultural.
  • encourage experts and others to contribute to improved policy development and more efficient financial performance by government through being able to access, manipulate and provide feedback on such material.

Using NZGOAL at the Ministry of Justice

The Ministry retains copyright of its material, however we can use the creative commons system to instantly let people know what they can legally do with our material.

The SSC and MOJ recommend using the Creative Commons Attribution (BY) licence as the default licence to promote the greatest re-use of our copyright works.

Creative commons logo

This licence lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build on our work, even commercially, as long as they credit us for the original creation.
