The United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime

The United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime requires countries to:

  • criminalize membership of organized criminal groups
  • introduce measures to combat transnational money laundering and transnational corruption
  • enable the proceeds of crime to be confiscated.

It also contains important Articles that promote international co-operation in the global fight against transnational organised crime.

There are also Protocols to this Convention relating to human trafficking, people smuggling and firearms.

New Zealand is fully compliant with the requirements of the Convention and the trafficking and smuggling Protocols, all of which have been ratified.

However, the Firearms Protocol has not yet been ratified but work is underway to do this as soon as possible.

This Convention is an important development in the fight against global corruption. New Zealand is fully committed to this Convention and to encouraging other countries to become a party to it.
