Crime Prevention Unit
Crime Reduction Strategy (CRS)
In May 2001, the Government replaced the Crime Prevention Strategy with the Crime
Reduction Strategy (CRS). The CRS sets out seven priorities for preventing and
reducing crime. The CRS is a cross-government strategy. The Crime Prevention Unit
(CPU) is currently leading projects under the CRS to:
- reduce community violence and sexual violence
- reduce theft of cars and theft from cars and
- reduce organised criminal activity.
The CRS itself is currently under review. The purpose of the review is to
examine:
- how well the CRS has functioned, what it has achieved and what lessons can be
learned from it
- whether it is still ‘fit for purpose’ or requires updating. Updating may
be necessary due to advancements in knowledge or changes in crime rates or
patterns, policy and legislative developments and shifting public concerns
- optimum approaches to take and factors to be considered if the CRS is to be
updated.
