Direct Negotiations with the Crown

Under Section 96 of the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004 the Attorney-General and the Minister of Maori Affairs may enter into an agreement with a group to recognise that, but for the vesting of the full legal and beneficial ownership of the public foreshore and seabed in the Crown, that group, or members of that group, would have had a claim for territorial customary rights over a specific area of the public foreshore and seabed.
