Ministry of Justice warns of fake callers
The Ministry of Justice is aware of scams by people claiming to represent the Ministry of Justice.
The scams involve someone claiming to be from a branch of the Ministry of Justice offering refunds on fines, or posing as a bank worker. The scams are part of a growing international trend, and are designed to obtain people’s personal details and financial information.
The Ministry of Justice does not engage outside agencies to make calls on their behalf, nor does it charge people a fee when it makes refunds.
Anyone who receives a phone call of this type is advised to contact the Ministry on 0800 770 025 as well as inform the police.
Information on how to protect yourself from scammers is available at www.scamwatch.govt.nz.
