Drivers of Crime

by LUMSDEH last modified May 17, 2010 11:42 AM

Drivers of Crime is an approach that focuses on addressing the underlying drivers of criminal offending within the New Zealand context.

Addressing the underlying drivers of crime is now a whole-of-government priority. Social and justice sector agencies are working together to reduce offending and victimisation, particularly for Māori. Action is underway in four priority areas. These areas were selected following discussion at the Drivers of Crime Ministerial Meeting in April 2009, as well as public submissions. Further detail about these can be found here

Good progress is being made to improve services for those at risk of being the offenders or victims of the future, and their families. The work also considers how to hold offenders to account, while addressing the underlying causes of their offending (such as lack of educational and employment opportunities or alcohol dependence) and divert them away from long term patterns of offending.
