The Government is holding a referendum on our voting system, MMP (Mixed Member Proportional Representation). The Electoral Referendum Bill has been introduced to the House of Representatives. The Bill provides for the referendum to be held at the same time as the next general election.

- 22 April 2010 - the Electoral Referendum Bill passes its first reading.
- 25 March 2010 - the Minister of Justice announces the introduction of the Electoral Referendum Bill.
- 16 February 2010 - the Minister of Justice announces the Government's further decisions on the 2011 referendum on MMP.
- 20 October 2009 - the Minister of Justice announces the Government's decisions on the timing and process for the first referendum on MMP, and any following referendum.
