Funding for initiatives targeting the primary prevention of sexual violence

Information on funding for initiatives targeting the primary prevention of sexual violence 2011-2013

As part of its response to Te Toiora Mata Tauherenga - Report of the Taskforce for Action on Sexual Violence, the Government committed $1,000,000 over two financial years to support sexual violence prevention education programmes.

The funding has been divided evenly between kaupapa and tikanga Māori initiatives and general initiatives respectively.

$400,000 ($200,000 per year) has been allocated to two national projects that are being carried out by Te Ohaakii a Hine – National Network Ending Sexual Violence Together (TOAH-NNEST).  TOAH-NNEST was the Government’s partner in the Taskforce for Action on Sexual Violence and each of its two whare, or caucuses, is leading a project.

The remaining $600,000 has been set aside for distribution through contestable funding rounds – $150,000 per year has been allocated to kaupapa and tikanga Māori initiatives and general initiatives respectively.

The first funding rounds were completed in June 2011.  Applications were considered by assessment panels that included Ministry representatives and experts in sexual violence prevention.

The successful kaupapa and tikanga Māori initiatives were funded for two years.  Funding for general initiatives was allocated for one year, and a further round to allocate funding for 2012/13 was held in April and May 2012.
