Financial assistance for people affected by death caused by a crime

This page provides a summary of financial assistance funded through the offender levy for people who have been affected by a death caused by a crime but where homicide (murder or manslaughter) charges have not been laid. For example, death caused by dangerous driving or careless use of a firearm.

Victims or their support agency/people should contact the organisation which administers the grants for further information and assistance with applications.

Funeral Expenses

Assistance for funeral costs or memorial service.

Families who have lost their loved one through a criminal act. 

The cost of the funeral or memorial service up to $5,788.92.

Contact ACC. The funeral director can invoice ACC directly, or the funeral director or the family can provide ACC with receipts.

Loss of income and general costs

How to apply

Help with loss of income and general costs of dealing with the aftermath of the crime.

Families who have lost their loved one through a criminal act. The applicant for the grant must be a family member. The criminal act must have taken place after 1 July 2011.

One grant of up to $3,000 per family.

Contact Victim Support. Applicants will be required to itemise costs.

Expenses for attending court and other hearings

How to apply

Assistance with travel-related costs (including travel, childcare, accommodation and meals) for attendance at court hearings and other hearings or meetings such as Parole Board hearings, restorative justice meetings, coronial hearings and meetings with victim advisors. Attendance at videoconferences is also included.

Up to five adult family members (adult means 18 years old or over). Families must be travelling outside their immediate area or show they need financial assistance to attend.

  • Up to $3,000 per person for court hearings
  • Up to $1,500 per person for Parole Board hearings
  • Up to $1,000 per person for other hearings and meetings.

Contact Victim Support. Travel and accommodation can be pre-booked through Victim Support. Otherwise receipts must be provided for reimbursement. Personal car use will be reimbursed at a set rate.

Counselling

How to apply

Trauma counselling. This covers the cost of counselling and travel if required.

Families and friends of homicide victims, and witnesses and first on the scene of the death.

Up to 30 sessions per person. 

Contact Victim Support.  Counsellors must be approved Victim Support counsellors.
