Parents and Whānau of Young Witnesses
Moving through the criminal justice system
What happens and how to get support
Supporting a young witness through the criminal justice system is an important role, so that the experience is as easy as it can be for the child or young person.
Witnesses are a very important part of the criminal justice system in New Zealand. They give vital evidence in investigations and court cases and help make sure that the right people are held to account for crimes they commit.
This leaflet is for people supporting children or young people under 18 years old who are witnesses for the police, and if the case goes to court, for the prosecutor who will present the case to the court. It explains what happens in the criminal justice system and where you can get information and support. It does not cover young witnesses who are appearing for the defence, or who are defendants themselves.
