The policy intention is to reduce the carrying of knives, and other weapons, by young people in particular, and their use in the commission of offences. The responses however, need to be proportionate to the fact that knife crime is an emerging issue in New Zealand.
The objectives of this proposal are to take a range of initiatives proportionate to the scale of the problem in New Zealand:
• to reduce and/or prevent the incidence of knife crime; and
• increase the public perception of safety and signal the seriousness of knife crime.
