TODD COUPER Ngati Kahungunu

"TANE-MITI-RANGI"

Totara

This sculpture illustrates the story of Tane-miti-rangi, a famous Tui with the extraordinary ability to recite chants of every kind. This bird was owned by a rangatira of Te Wairoa named Iwi Katere. The theft of Tane-miti-rangi by a neighbouring rangatira Tamatera started the wars of Te Wairoa and as a result Tamatera and his people were forced to move south to Heretaunga
