The Ministry of Justice is responsible for a range of support and operational activity relating to the Treaty of Waitangi settlement processes. This includes negotiations for the settlement of historical claims, management of land, delivery of registry services, hearings management, research services, judicial support, and maintaining records of title and ownership information of Māori land.
The Waitangi Tribunal
The Waitangi Tribunal enquires into claims made by Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 relating to actions or omissions of the Crown that breach the promises made in the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Office of Treaty Settlements
The Office of Treaty Settlements negotiates and implements the settlement of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, and manages land owned by the Crown for the purpose of treaty settlement.
The Māori Land Court
The Māori Land Court maintains records of title and ownership information for Māori land, and deals with issues relating to matters such as multiple ownership of land and the laws relating to succession of ownership.
