Treaty Settlements - Office of Treaty Settlements

The Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) negotiates the settlement of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims and builds positive relationships between the Crown and Māori. OTS is responsible to the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations and provides policy advice on specific negotiations and generic settlement policies.

OTS also implements settlements of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, as well as providing policy advice on, and operation of, protection mechanisms applying to the disposal of surplus Crown lands.

OTS manages a property portfolio this is intended for claimants to select from as part of their eventual settlement redress. In the meantime this portfolio is managed to recover the cost of holding properties and obtain a commercial rate of return.
