Rangitāne and the Crown sign Wairarapa Deed of Settlement

Rangitāne o Wairarapa and Rangitane Tamaki-nui-a-Rua signed a Deed of Settlement with the Crown on 6 August.

The deed, settling their historical Treaty of Waitangi claims, includes a Crown apology, historical account and redress for historical breaches of the Treaty.

“Today’s deed signing at Mākirikiri Marae in Dannevirke is a historic day in the relationship between Rangitāne and the Crown,” said Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Christopher Finlayson.

“I congratulate Rangitāne on the settlement they have achieved with the Crown.  This provides groundwork for the cultural and economic future of Rangitāne and is an important step in restoring the Treaty relationship between the Crown and Rangitāne”, Mr Finlayson said.

A bill will now be introduced to Parliament to enact the settlement in law.  This is likely to take place within the next two years.
