Parenting Through Separation course

Parenting Through Separation is a free parenting course that’s available all year around New Zealand.

At the course, you’ll get practical advice to help you understand and manage the needs of your children following separation.

The Parenting Through Separation course can also help grandparents and other family and whānau members who may be involved in caring for your children.

The course takes 4 hours and is held either all in 1 session or in 2 sessions of 2 hours. You and your ex-partner should attend different courses. You can take a support person if the person running the course agrees.

When you should attend Parenting Through Separation

Parenting Through Separation is the first step for most people when you are working out how to care for your children after separating. The course covers:

  • how separation affects children
  • what’s best for children when their parents no longer live together
  • tools and tips for dealing with the situation, including how to make a parenting plan.

This may be all you need to get arrangements for shared care of your children sorted. If you still can’t agree, you can take part in Family Dispute Resolution with an impartial family mediator. Parenting Through Separation helps you prepare for Family Dispute Resolution.

Sometimes, taking part in Parenting Through Separation won’t be right for your situation. For example, you might need to apply for an urgent Parenting Order because of domestic violence or if your child is at risk or the other parent is going to take your child overseas without your permission. In these cases, the court may exempt you from attending.
