Discussion papers - the future of our justice system

Social capital and wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand's justice system

Tim Hughes, Treasury Principal Advisor, recently wrote a very interesting discussion paper while working at the Ministry of Justice exploring ‘Social Capital’ and ‘Wellbeing’ concepts from the perspective of Aotearoa New Zealand's justice system.

Our justice system plays a central role in generating and maintaining social capital in its role as enforcing regulations made by all parts of Government, from access to justice to timely resolution of disputes. This paper offers ideas on how to grow, enhance, and maintain social capital from a justice perspective, and identifies examples of policy that can provide growth in these domains.
