Other things to consider when you separate or divorce

Where to live

You may find you don’t have anywhere to live. Some options are:

  • stay with friends or family
  • move into an established flat with other flatmates
  • look for a rental property
  • contact Housing New Zealand(external link) to apply for social housing assistance
  • contact Ministry of Social Development(external link) to find a rental property
  • negotiate an extended stay at a hotel, motel, or long-term accommodation property
  • continue to live at your existing home with your ex-partner if it’s safe to do so – this might be a temporary or a more long-term arrangement.

Update your information

If you move, you may need to update your details. For example, this could be with whānau, government agencies, service providers, banks, medical specialists, or your lawyer. While you do this, there are options to have your mail redirected with NZ Post.(external link)

You may also want to update your passwords.

Create or update your will

When you separate from your partner, it’s a good time to make, or review, your will. You may want to think about whether you want to change your will to reflect what you want to happen to your property, and how you want any of your children or people who depend on you to be cared for in the event of your death.

Looking after pets

It can be difficult looking after pets when you’re separating or moving to another location. It’s important your pets are also given a stable living environment and adequate care. Some options are:

  • a family member or friend who can temporarily look after your pet
  • catteries or kennels in your area
  • talking to your local animal shelter if you don’t think you can continue to properly care for your pet.
