Victims of family violence will have some of the furniture they need to get re-established in new homes, thanks to surplus items that didn't make the move to the new Justice and Emergency Services Precinct in Christchurch.
As part of our commitment to supporting initiatives involving victims of crime and family violence, the Battered Women’s Trust(external link) in Christchurch was chosen as a recipient of some of the excess furniture.
The items included tables and chairs, crockery, cutlery, whiteware, cooking equipment and children’s toys.
The Trust provides a range of services to women and children in Christchurch who are victims of family violence. The donation will give 15 families the things they need to get re-established after they leave the Trust's safe houses.
Other furniture items including desks, seating and bookshelves were donated to local charities and primary schools, and to Statistics New Zealand to use during the 2018 census.
Further furniture was relocated to other Ministry sites, including the Dunedin historic courthouse strengthening project, Nelson courthouse and National Office in Wellington for use in upcoming court refurbishments.
