Victims Work Programme

The justice sector is delivering the Victims Work Programme, with seven initiatives now underway. These include a mix of new and continuing initiatives designed to improve the experience of victims when they engage with the justice system, close service gaps, and identify opportunities to reduce the complexity victims face. The programme will provide decision-makers with advice on how investment and resourcing across the sector can be better aligned to support victims. Initiatives include:

  1. Addressing victims’ complaints and making continuous improvements (Justice Sector Directorate)
  2. Improving victims’ experience of Victim Impact Statements (NZ Police)
  3. Enhancing the voice of victims to support New Zealand Parole Board hearing outcomes (NZ Parole Board & NZ Police)
  4. Increasing victims’ engagement in Family Group Conferences after sexual harm (Ministry of Justice)
  5. Delivering better services for victims (Justice Sector Directorate)
  6. The VictimsInfo website refresh (Ministry of Justice)
  7. Victims of Fraud (Justice Sector Directorate).

A cross-agency group of leads has been established to guide delivery, and a programme management plan is in place. Alongside the initiatives being delivered through the Victims Work Programme, the Justice Sector Directorate is providing visibility of agency-led activities focused on the victim experience from across the sector; to build a clearer picture of the collective impact the sector is delivering for victims.

The Victims Work Programme will be reviewed regularly to ensure the mix and sequencing of initiatives remain fit for purpose and aligned to strategic objectives, and to support agencies to deliver an improved experience for victims.
