New suite of resources for the Family Court launched

Today, the Ministry has introduced an exciting new range of resources to help parents, guardians and whānau understand the options available to them when making decisions about the care of their tamariki after a separation or change in family situation.

In 2019, the Te Korowai Ture ā-Whānau report [PDF, 1.3 MB] was published, which found that much of the information designed to help parents, guardians and whānau was hard to understand, not accessible and of poor quality. It also found that many people approaching the Family Court to help make decisions about the care of their tamariki had no idea about the types of services available to them.

We have been working with user groups to ensure our design is inclusive and reflects the diversity and needs of the people who will be using them. This first set of print and electronic resources have been designed to be an approachable resource, focused on whānau, which you could stick on your fridge at home. The next stage of the work will include the translations of these resources into a number of different languages and formats to ensure they are widely accessible. They will be available in physical form at our courts and digitally on our website, where they will be able to be downloaded.

Next year, we will be launching new webpages and a Parenting Order journey map, which will be easier for parents, guardians and whānau to navigate.
