Sector Governance
The Justice Sector Leadership Board, made up of the chief executives of six justice agencies, provides shared direction for the sector and governance of key work programmes. As a group, the JSLB focuses on areas within the criminal justice system that they can directly govern and exercise collective decision-rights over. The current priority areas for the JSLB are:
- Timely Justice and Remote Participation
- The Law and Order Targets
- Victims
- Fraud and Corruption (new priority – work programme currently under development)
The JSLB is supported by the Justice Sector Directorate, who help to co-ordinate and drive progress across the key sector work programmes that support each of the JSLB priority areas.
The Justice Sector Directorate also provides a Secretariat function for sector governance groups, whose work together ensures the achievement of collective justice sector outcomes. These groups are:
- Justice Sector Ministers (JSM) - The JSM is made up of the Ministers with responsibility over the six core justice sector agencies, namely the Ministers of Justice, Police and Corrections, the Minister for Courts, the Minister for Children (who is responsible for youth justice policy), the Minister responsible for the Serious Fraud Office and the Attorney-General. The Minister of Justice is the Lead Justice Sector Minister. JSM usually meets monthly.
- Justice Sector Leadership Board (JSLB) – The JSLB meets quarterly to review progress on their key priority areas, and discuss other issues of relevance to the sector. The Secretary for Justice is Chair of the JSLB.
- JSLB Subgroup (for Timely Justice and Remote Participation) – Members include the Chief Executives of Corrections (Chair), Police, Justice and Crown Law, who meet monthly. The Chief District Court Judge and National Executive Judge are also standing attendees.
- JSLB Subgroup (for Fraud and Corruption) – This JSLB subgroup is currently being established, but members will include the Chief Executives of the Serious Fraud Office (Chair), Police, and Justice.
- Justice Sector Executive Committee Operations (JSEC-O) – The JSECO consists of members from justice sector agencies at Deputy Chief Executives level. JSECO supports JSLB by overseeing key operational programmes that impact the justice system. The Committee’s current focus is the Victims Work Programme.
- Justice Sector Executive Committee Investment (JSEC-I) – JSECI consists of members from justice sector agencies at Deputy Chief Executives level. JSECI supports JSLB by overseeing strategy, resources and investment across the sector.
