The New Zealand Government has set a target(external link) of reducing victims of violent crime by 20,000 by 2029. It is using the New Zealand Crime and Victims’ Survey (NZCVS) to measure the number of victims of violent crime.
To support the Government in monitoring progress in reducing violent crime, there will now be more regular releases of NZCVS estimates on the number of victims of violent crime. These estimates are year-to-month estimates,
These releases will consist of a factsheet and supporting data tables.
Methodology note
The quarterly release of violent crime data is a new use of NZCVS data. These quarterly estimates are being produced for monitoring purposes and should be considered indicative. A methodology note has been produced to help users understand how the NZCVS quarterly estimates are produced, where the quarterly methodology differs from the annual methodology, and to aid in interpretation of results.
The data tables contain additional time series data for violent crime victims, including breakdowns by selected demographic groups and sub-offences. Alongside a standardised set of data tables, a supplementary set of data tables are published each release to highlight key trends and findings.
