Ministry of Justice 2025/26 Annual Report published
The Ministry of Justice 2025/26 Annual Report, published today (19 October 2026), highlights progress across the Ministry's key priorities and its delivery of court and justice services throughout New Zealand.
Secretary for Justice Andrew Kibblewhite says the Ministry has continued to respond to high demand for justice services, including the facilitation of almost 970,000 District Court events, while advancing a significant programme of work across the justice sector.
This includes supporting 42 Bills through the House – 23 of which achieved Royal assent, processing about 100,000 legal aid applications, collecting $261 million in fines, reparations and legal aid debt, and providing grants to more than 7,000 victims through the Victim Assistance Scheme.
"We have made tangible progress in improving access to justice, strengthening the performance and sustainability of the justice system, and continuing to provide the services New Zealanders rely on,” says Andrew Kibblewhite.
"Our staff work incredibly hard to build a more accessible, effective and resilient justice system while ensuring people can continue to access the services and support they need."
The report also includes the Annual Report for The Office of Treaty Settlements and Takutai Moana – Te Tari Whakatau.
