Ministry of Justice leader awarded fellowship to explore better public services

Matthew (Acting Group Manager, Courts & Tribunals in the Ministry’s Operations and Service Delivery group) will research practical ways for leaders to support their organisations to work across agency boundaries and achieve shared goals. He says New Zealanders experience public services as one system rather than as separate organisations.

“Through this fellowship, I hope to identify ways for leaders to strengthen collaboration across organisational boundaries so that services work more effectively for the people who rely on them.

"I really appreciate the opportunity the LDC has given me, along with the support from Secretary for Justice Andrew Kibblewhite through the application process, as well as the ongoing encouragement from my team.”

Mr Kibblewhite says he is proud to celebrate Matthew's achievements: “I’m incredibly pleased for Matt. This is a significant achievement and a real credit to him and his leadership.”

Matthew will review research from New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom while connecting with leaders, staff and stakeholders across the wider justice system, as well as at other public sector organisations. This will help him examine collaboration from both a leadership perspective and through the experience of those working on the frontline. He will then use his findings to develop practical lessons for New Zealand.

The LDC Fellowship is awarded each year to mid-level and senior leaders for international research and study. Find out more about the Leadership Development Centre Fellowship(external link).
