New Papakura Courthouse handed over ahead of January opening
Papakura’s much-needed new courthouse is nearing its January 2027 opening following the rapid completion of the $34 million build in just 17 months.
The courthouse at 40 Elliot St was ceremonially handed over to the Ministry of Justice today following a pre-dawn blessingby Ngāti Tamaoho and Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua kaumātua, marking practical completion of the building.Minister of Justice, Hon Paul Goldsmith, and the Minister for Courts, Hon Nicole McKee, also attended an event later in the morning to mark this significant milestone.
Ministry of Justice Deputy Secretary Corporate Services Paula Knaap, says the existing courthouse is in poor condition, with longstanding leaks contributing to mould and ongoing concerns about indoor air quality. The new courthouse will replace the ageing facility that is no longer fit for purpose and will help meetthe needs of Papakura and the wider South Auckland community.
“Today’s milestone brings us closer to opening a modern courthouse that puts people at the heart of the justice system. It will help make justice more accessible and effective, while providing a safer, more supportive experience for court users.
“The project is an important part of the Ministry’s stewardship of its property portfolio, supporting the careful management and renewal of court infrastructure over the long term.Half the courthouse was built off-site as prefabricated modules, allowing construction to be completed faster and more efficiently.
“The new facility will include three courtrooms, two hearing rooms and a dedicated suite for vulnerable witnesses, helping to provide safer, more appropriate spaces for those using the courthouse.”
Over the coming weeks, the Ministry will complete the interior fit-out, install technology and carry out testing and operational preparations ahead of the courthouse opening to the public in January 2027.
