Paying reparation

Overview

If a judge has ordered you to pay reparation to a victim, you need to do so as soon as possible.

If the judge did not give any payment instructions, you have 28 days from the day you were fined to pay in full or talk to us about a payment plan.

How to pay reparation

You need to pay reparation in the same way fines are paid. Once your payment has cleared at the bank, it is forwarded to the victim.

Pay using one of the options in Pay fines or reparation

If you make any payment directly to the victim, let us know and give us evidence, so we can update our records. If you don’t tell us, we will keep asking you for payment and may take enforcement action.

How the process works

You will receive a Notice of Fine letter from the court. It will include:

  • how much reparation you owe
  • any other fines or court costs you have been ordered to pay
  • how to pay.

Follow the judge’s instructions if there are any. For example, pay in full or by instalments or by a date.

If you have outstanding fines in addition to reparation, any money you pay will go towards the reparation first.

If you don’t pay your reparation

If you do not pay within 28 days or as the judge has instructed, or make a payment plan, the court can take enforcement action against you. The court can collect the outstanding amount in the same way it collects an unpaid fine.

If you want to appeal the reparation sentence

You can appeal your reparation sentence up to 20 working days from the day you were sentenced. Appeals have to be made in writing to the court. You can get forms to appeal at the court where you were sentenced.
