Paying Cost Contribution Orders

Overview

If the Family Court hears your case, you may be asked to pay part of the cost of the court services. To do this, the judge makes a legal order, called a Cost Contribution Order.

Ways to pay your Cost Contribution Order

You can pay your cost contribution order:

  • In person, at a court – use Find us to find a court near you.

  • Over the phone – by debit or credit card, call 0800 600 090 (free from NZ mobile or landline). We accept Visa, Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard, Mastercard and Prezzy Card. There are no additional transaction fees. 

  • By bill payment using the Internet banking instructions below.

  • By automatic payments using the Internet banking instructions below.

  • Set this up yourself, making payments weekly, fortnightly or monthly. 
  • Let us know you've set this up by calling 0800 600 090 or emailing familycourtdebt@justice.govt.nz with the following details:
      • payment amount
      • how often (weekly, fortnightly or monthly)
      • payment start date. 

Internet banking

To pay by internet banking or set up automatic payments, log into your bank account and use the following details:

  • Payee name: search for ‘MOJ’ and select: Ministry of Justice FCCO Crown Receipts  

  • Bank account number: 03-0049-0001063-28 (or 028)

  • Particulars: reference number (from your Cost Contribution Order)

  • Code: your last name and initials (for example, Doe J D)

  • Reference: leave this blank

If you can't pay the Cost Contribution Order

Call us to discuss your options, such as paying in full, part payments, or payment arrangements.

Is a Cost Contribution Order classed as legal aid debt? 

No, a Cost Contribution Order is not a legal aid debt. It is not related to legal aid.

Can I dispute a Cost Contribution Order?

You may be able to appeal against a Cost Contribution Order through the High Court.
