Forensic report writers

The Ministry of Justice has introduced the Terms and Conditions applicable to the Provision of Forensic Writing Services (Website Terms).

A forensic report writer conducts a mental health assessment of individuals involved in criminal proceedings. Their reports are used by judges to guide, fitness to stand trial, bail decisions, sentencing and other judicial outcomes.

    A forensic report writer conducts a mental health assessment of individuals in criminal proceedings under sections 23, 35 and 38 of the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003, and section 88 of the Sentencing Act 2002.

  • Fees and expenses

    If you’re a forensic report writer for the Ministry, you’ll need to complete and submit an invoice after the report has been completed.

    From September 2026, the Ministry is opening the Panel for suitably qualified and experienced psychologists and psychiatrists to apply to join.
