Find out how to apply online for a private security licence or certificate of approval.

Before you apply online

  1. Find out whether you need a licence or certificate

  2. Make sure you have:
    1. a suitable passport style photo
    2. details of your identification (ID)
    3. your proof of training and skills documents
    4. a MasterCard or Visa credit or debit card to pay your fee.

  3. Check if you already have a licence through the Public register of licence and certificate holders:
    1. If you licence has expired, click 'Apply Online'
    2. If your licence is active, click 'Renew Online'

Note: You can’t apply online for temporary certificates or under the trans-Tasman mutual recognition scheme. You have to apply by mail.


You can only pay with Mastercard or Visa credit or debit cards.

Important tip: Remember what your fee should be when you apply. If you’re charged a different fee, you’ve made a mistake and you should contact us.

* If you apply for a company licence online, make sure every officer of the company (director or CEO) completes a company officer form.
